The Moscow Mule has fast become a favorite cocktail. So the rumor goes that the Moscow Mule is a product of American capitalism at its best.
A good cocktail recommendation from a trusted friend is worth its weight in gold. That’s exactly how the Moscow Mule found its way into my glass. One conversation, one taste, and I was completely sold.
The Moscow Mule has quietly become one of the most beloved cocktails in the world, and honestly, it deserves every bit of that reputation. Sharp, refreshing, and unmistakably zingy, it’s the kind of drink that works at a backyard barbecue just as well as it does at a swanky rooftop bar. Once you try one, you’ll understand why it’s earned a permanent spot on cocktail menus everywhere.
Interesting Moscow Mule fact
Here’s where it gets interesting though. despite the name, the Moscow Mule has absolutely nothing to do with Russia. The story behind it is a classic piece of American entrepreneurial hustle. In the 1940s, three business owners found themselves sitting on an inconvenient problem: one had a warehouse full of vodka that nobody in America wanted, another was struggling to move cases of ginger beer, and a third had a surplus of copper mugs gathering dust. Rather than cut their losses, they put their heads together and invented a cocktail that required all three. The Moscow Mule was born.
So it was created from tradition or craft, but from capitalism doing what it does best.
It’s a good origin story for a great drink.
Whats the glassware
Now, when it comes to glassware, I’ll be upfront. I’m still drinking mine from a short cocktail glass at home, and it tastes just as good. The copper mugs are undeniably iconic and they do keep the drink colder for longer, so they’re absolutely on my list to pick up. If you have them, use them. If you don’t, don’t let that stop you from making this tonight.
For vodka, I’ve been reaching for Poliakov lately across most of my vodka-based cocktails. It’s smooth, clean, and doesn’t break the bank.
Exactly what you want in a cocktail where the vodka plays a supporting role rather than the lead. That said, use whatever vodka you enjoy drinking. The Moscow Mule is forgiving, and a good ginger beer will carry you a long way regardless of the brand in your bottle.

Best drinking for the Moscow Mule
Well, think of hot days. Honestly, I love the lime and ginger flavours. So for me, a brunch or boozy lunch type of drink. Just drink it whenever you want, and enjoy it. It’s all about a short cocktail glass for me. The Copper Mugs would be great to try, which you can get from Amazon.
What’s in a Moscow Mule
Vodka
It’s a simple but very elegant cocktail to make. With vodka as above, pick one that you like. I have a thing at the moment for Russian Vodka, so it’s Poliakov Vodka.. Honestly, there are so many great brands, drink what you enjoy.
Ginger Beer
Now, for this drink, it’s the Australian-made Bundaberg Ginger Beer. There are so many decent ginger beers out there. But for this drink, it’s all about the Bundy ginger beer, simply the best on the market.
Lime juice/wedges
Pick fresh limes. I love fresh lime juice, I always squeeze the wedges over the ice.
Ice
You can not get it wrong. The preference is ice cubes, not crushed ice. I like those big cubes.
Which glass do I use?
Short glasses are best. However, legend has it that Copper Mugs are the best. The Bold & Divne Moscow Mule Copper Mugs come in a set of 2.
